Goals
To learn from each other about what has been done and what is possible with Compendium.
To build a stronger community.
Logistics
Convenors:
May 2-3 (and possibly 4), 2007
Somewhere in the Bay Area. Seems like Mountain View is the center of the universe so far.
Design
Al Selvin often likens using Compendium to playing an instrument. Let's approach this workshop as a gathering of musicians rather than as a gathering of academics. Here are some principles:
- Mentorship
- Emphasis on practice (jam sessions)
- Storytelling
- Small group/large group exchanges
May 2
9am -- Opening ritual. Serves as a way to welcome the group and also to connect this gathering to the community as a whole. If we have a lot of people (>20), perhaps a storytelling panel (facilitated and mapped by one of the convenors) of some of the long-time Compendium people.
9:30am -- Breakout into "home" groups, groups of three (depending on total attendance. Pair experienced person with relative newbie. Experienced person facilitates and maps this discussion, which focuses on getting to know each other, surfacing questions, sharing experiences, discussing high-level framing question (TBD). Possible questions:
- Why is Compendium important for the future of society?
10:15am -- Report-out, facilitated/mapped by one of the convenors. Each group spends five minutes reporting their conversations, pointing out key points using their maps.
11:15am -- Break. Maps get merged.
11:30am -- Speed Geeking. Lightning presentations (6 minutes).
12:30pm -- Lunch.
1:30pm -- Open Space marketplace. Participants propose to host sessions. People signup for sessions.
1:45pm -- Open Space sessions 1. Everything gets mapped. Encourage less experienced to map.
2:45pm -- Report-out, facilitated/mapped by one of the convenors. Session hosts report-out, followed by discussion.
3:45pm -- Return to home groups. Discuss lessons learned, review initial questions, surface new questions. Mentoring should be happening throughout.
4:45pm -- Closing circle
