Goals
- internal processes around database
- what's already out there?
- modeling
- thinking about database as networking, not just fundraising
Design
Thursday, January 22, 2009 (9am-4pm)
Theme: Networks (What Is Possible?)
9-9:10am -- Intros, Framing (icebreaker?)
- paper airplane
- "i'm not a technologist"
- passing notes (letter size + markers + painter's tape); Twitter simulation
9:10-9:30am -- Contextual Authority Tagging
Goals:
- Engage with each other in a unique and special way.
- Recognize the intelligence of the group.
- Thinking about networks is about stepping out of your shoes.
- One word says a lot, especially in aggregate. (Leading into stigmergy discussion.)
- Gives me a quick primer on the people in the room
9:30-10:30am -- Goal Setting
Break up into three teams. Technology should serve a purpose. What are CLPP's needs? Each team is going to produce a goal statement, but they're going to write them in two different ways. You have 20 minutes. Listen carefully to the rules:
- One team passes around paper. Every message should be on new pieces of paper. You may write whatever you want on the paper. You may not talk with your teammates -- all communication must happen through the paper.
- Etherpad (or whiteboard). Again, you cannot talk with your teammates.
- Observer group
Debrief.
10:30am-12:00pm -- Technology As Place
Show photos. Two goals of this exercise:
- A picture says a thousand words.
- Environment matters.
- Trust your instincts.
Four teams of 3-4. Design your ideal collaborative space for the upcoming conference. (Need 4 post-it pads w/ easels or whiteboards.)
- The physics are different
- Distance is different
- Aggregation and remixing/mashups. People's conversational artifacts can be aggregated.
- Thought experiment: Maintaining momentum after conference
12:00-12:45pm -- Lunch
Get Chatter and Wiki account.
12:45-1:15pm -- Dance Floor and the Balcony
- Stigmergy. Remember the pictures?
- Make the goals and the patterns explicit. Make the network self-aware.
- Bottoms-up.
1:15-2:45pm -- Social Media I
Break out into groups. Each are going to make 5 minute presentations on the following tools:
- Social Networks
- Blogs
- Wikis
- Forums
What are they, what are the possibilities, and what are the best practices? Document on a Wiki and "tweet" during the design process.
Goals:
- Leverage the intelligence of the group.
- Remember the physics.
- And a little help from me.
Show CommonCraft videos?
2:45-3:00pm -- Break
3:00-3:50pm -- Social Media II
What makes these tools "social"?
- People
- Transparency
- Interaction
A new way of engaging. My Twitter story.
Shared displays in meetings.
What's Out There (about CLPP)?
- Blogosphere
- MySpace
- Flickr (?)
Debrief.
3:50-4:00pm -- Closing Circle
"Tweet" final thoughts on an index card. No more than 140 characters.
Friday, January 23, 2009 (9am-4pm)
9:00-9:30am -- Check-in: Questions, Comments. Dialogue map the conversation.
9:30-10:45am -- Design an Online Space. Parallel with designing physical space.
- Designing an Online Teacher Training
- Maintaining Momentum After Face-To-Face
10:45-11am -- Break
11:00am-12:00pm -- Consultation Breakouts
Divide into three teams:
- Database
- Project management
- Engaging the network
Capture on the Wiki:
- Your needs
- What are you doing, and how would you like to be doing it?
- Possibilities
- Immediate
- Long-term
Report-outs and consultative sessions. Dialogue map this.
12:00-12:30pm -- Lunch
12:30-2:00pm -- Consultative Sessions
Each breakout group reports-out, with the rest of the group acting as "consultants." Dialogue map this.
2:00-3:00pm -- Principles and Roadmap
3:00-3:15pm -- Break
3:15-4:00pm -- Closing Circle
- Final questions
- Contextual Authority Tagging report-out
