Gail Taylor on Wicked Problems and Solutions

I drove up to beautiful Gualala, California up in Mendocino yesterday to visit my friend and advisor, Gail Taylor. As we walked along a trail where the Gualala River meets the Pacific Ocean, I took a moment to capture some of our conversation on video:
For much more of Gail’s story and wisdom, listen to the podcast I did with her two years ago.

I was hooked when Gail said, "It's all about really deep collaboration" and "We need to constantly reframe what is learning." These aren't the prevailing attitudes among organizational leaders in my environment, yet there are signs all around that business as usual simply does not work. I wonder whether change will have to be led by people at both ends of the age spectrum, rather than in the middle? The Millenials, Gen-Xers, and Baby Boomers with whom I'm talking mostly continue to seek validation from leaders who may not be focused on things that matter – or learning at all.
I think it's okay if change is driven by youth, provided that the structure that is already in place doesn't drive away all of their good sense and instincts. I think we're capable of seeing change happen very quickly, even if the old guard is holding on, kicking and screaming.
